F: Fingernail Polish

What in the world does fingernail polish have to do with writing?
I enjoy having colored nails. The brighter the better.
I’ve found that when I paint my nails, my writing improves. The reason? When I’m typing, I look down on my hands and it makes me smile. It just looks good.
And a happy writer is a productive writer.
How does that apply to you?
Besides writing, what are some things that bring you joy?
Does solitaire or Angry Birds bring a smile on your face? Do you enjoy long walks? Ice cream cones? Playing tag with your kids?
Often, especially when the deadlines loom, writers tend to neglect the rest of their lives. But remember, a happy writer is a productive writer. So take a break. Go have fun and know that when you get back to writing, it will only be better.

  1. Love it... & I totally know what you mean.. I had a pretty tough meeting last week.. painted my nails RED.. & felt like I was ready to go. :-)
I also work in the make up industry.. so I have about 75 different colors in my cabinet! LOL

  2. I know what you mean a little bit of colour and some distraction helps focus. I love Angry Birds, long walks, ice cream cones. Great post!

  3. Taking a break or having something nearby that makes you relax, smile, breathe, is good. We have four dogs so walking with them puts the world in perspective and blows fresh air through the brain cells.

  4. Nail varnish definitely makes me smile. I have to keep a list of the ones I have so I don't accidentally buy repeats ;)

  5. Fingernail painting is a genius idea! I am so trying this at the weekend!

Images make me happy. They are usually images in my head of how my characters look. That usually inspires me to write more, and write better.

  6. Nail polish doesn't last on my nails with all that typing and I'm one of those people that can't stand to look at even a tiny little chip, so then I have to take all the polish off. That's why I paint my toenails. Or better yet, have someone else paint them. That brings me a wee bit of joy.

  7. I love my toes painted...but I don't think typing with them will be a good idea. Ice cream, now there is something that I enjoy and music and just listening to the birds on a beautiful spring day. Thanks for making me think about happy things!

  9. Sage advice! We have to cherish the other parts of our lives or else this pubbing world would leave us in the dumps. Way too much negativity. I ususally enjoy nature to keep my perspective positive... and hey I see another PK in your comments, I must check it out....

  10. Fresh flowers! I hardly ever get them because I cannot justify the cost, but I really love having them in my home. I am hoping to someday have a garden that I can cut flowers from.

  12. I love my nail polish!!! I have a little friend, four years old, who always notices and appreciates my many shades of polish. Her mom is very "natural" and I think it broadens the little one's perspectives!

  14. Wonderful advice! Nail polish has that effect on me, as well. It sort of colors everything I do for a day or two. It's also rare that I paint them, though. Everything feels prettier when I do it with painted nails.

  15. A Happy writer is a productive writer---wonder why that doesn't work for me ? I like best when I'm buzzed and upset about something.

  16. I don't paint my nails because they are hideous and paint would just make them worse. But I love all the pretty colors! My fun thing is going for walks and chatting with my friend at the coffee shop. I also relax by playing piano and guitar, watching movies and baking. Great post!
