Z: Zebra

Nope I don’t have a pet zebra. In fact, I’m not actually going to talk about zebras the animals at all.
I’m going to talk about why I can never have zebras in my stories.
Here’s the scenario: Have you ever been editing your novel and you know a certain part needs fixing, but you just need time to think about it?
You could let your screen sit there while you ponder or walk or do whatever to get the creative juices flowing or you could move on. In moving on, if you’re like me you forget where the part is.
I mean it isn’t that big of a deal. I can find it again. But that takes time, scrolling through 300 some pages.
Here’s my solution. I have one word that I stick in as my finder word. Then when I am ready to write the parts I’ve thought about I do a Control + F and type in my word. It takes me to all the parts I need quickly and efficiently.
As you might guess, my finder word is zebra.
What nifty little writing tricks do you have?
Happy writing.

  4. Very interesting: never even thought of this. Now, you know, somewhere you'll have a Zebra protagonist that must be written! ;)

  6. That's a great trick to use. I may have to borrow that one. I usually just leave myself a note within the text in all caps, but a key word like that might be easier.

Congrats on finishing the challenge. I'm still in recovery mode myself. :)

  9. Genius! I always type in a bunch of XXXXXXX's in bold to make them stand out, but I still scroll through the pages which takes forever. This is MUCH easier!
Thanks for the follow! It's nice to meet you!

  14. I don't have a finder word as such. I use the hashtag #. It's saves loads of time, doesn't it.

  20. When I'm stuck on a name or need to research a point, I highlight a section of the text in yellow. When I'm ready to go back and solve the problem, it's very easy to find.

  23. Thats funny. Sorry I missed this post earlier. I used to do software development. Programmers put inline comments as they go to state what they're trying to do in case someone else comes behind them and can't figure it out.

In my writing, I use square brackets when I need to note to myself what I need to fix later. [Like this and on its own line.]

  26. When I can't decide on the right wording I just put [those things, the squarish things, you know the ones] around the idea I want to revise. Then I go back later and zebra it.

  27. That is a very nifty trick! I'll have to try that sometime. I usually just spend way too much time scrolling through pages trying to find that spot. :) And by the way, I love the quote and title of your blog! :)
